Sonora Desert Museum

007

Last Thursday we went with friends to the Sonora Desert Museum. There is so much to see that it took most of the day. There is no way I could show pictures of everything but I will include a few.

The museum is on the edge of the Saguaro National Forest. When I say forest it is not like a forest in Oregon. It is more like mesquite trees and saguaro that look like phone poles with arms. Here is a picture.

We had a guided tour and learned a lot about the geological history of the area, and the interaction of the soil, vegetation and bird and animal inhabitants of the Sonora desert. It was fascinating. All of the animals except the cougar and bobcat were active. The cats seem to like to sleep during the day. We got a good look at some animals we had not seen before, the bighorn sheep and the prairie dog.

The most special part of the day was the time spent in the two aviaries. One had birds found in the Sonora Desert, like cardinals, one kind of parrot, quail, several kinds of doves, flickers and others.

The other aviary was for just hummingbirds. We spent about an hour in there just watching the hummers zip around. We even found a small nest in there. Here are some pics.

Very pretty picture of your chicken salad wrap. Can't believe I didn't take a picture of my taco salad.
    It was a great day!
