After our trail ride on Sunday morning I knew that Billy was just the right horse for me. I still have a lot to learn but he is a great, well trained, and sensible horse. This ride was his first time out in the woods away from a stall or an arena. He did awesome. He did have trouble keeping his feet still while waiting for everyone to get ready to go but that is to be expected when he is in a new environment with so many new things to see and smell. I just kept circling him around, giving him a chance to move and dispell his energy and get used to all of the new stuff. When we started down the trail he didn't spook at anything! I could feel his muscles jump when he saw something scary like a big white boulder or a charred pine stump but he just kept on walking. Such a good boy!
I have been working with him for a week seeing how he responds to leg and rein cues. Today he finally got him to go consistantly into a nice soft trot. It was a matter of me learning how to ask him for it and asking him to stay in it. He is very well trained but I am learning how to tell him to do what I want.
